If you are choosing among these four US credit unions, begin with eligibility and the account you will actually use, not a headline APY. Navy Federal is relevant only to people within its military, Department of Defense or qualifying family/household field of membership. BECU has a defined Washington, selected Oregon/Idaho, association and other eligibility structure. Alliant and PenFed say broadly that people can apply, but application, identity verification, membership and product approval are still separate steps. 2 5 10 14

A direct decision framework

Use this sequence before comparing a rate or fee.

  1. Can you become a member? Read the credit union’s own field-of-membership rules and complete its application process. Being invited to apply is not a promise of membership or an account opening outcome.
  2. Which account is the job to be done? Compare a basic checking account, a membership savings account, a high-yield savings account, or a relationship-tier account separately. A strong rate on a small balance tier does not make the whole institution the right choice.
  3. What conditions can you reliably meet every month? Check eStatements, recurring electronic deposits, debit activity, minimum balances and direct-deposit requirements before treating a stated APY or waived fee as available to you.
  4. What access will you need? Check the branch and ATM network in the places you use, whether an ATM owner can still charge a surcharge, and how cash deposits or outgoing wires work.
  5. How will savings be insured? Confirm federal insurance and calculate coverage based on all accounts at that one institution and their ownership categories—not by assuming that every dollar has a separate $250,000 limit.

Bottom line: There is no support here for calling one institution the “best” for every US consumer. The evidence supports a conditional shortlist: Navy Federal for people who meet its military/DoD/family or household field of membership; Alliant and PenFed for applicants seeking national digital access subject to their processes and account terms; and BECU for people who meet its regional, association or other published membership routes. A reader’s eligibility, balance, transaction habits and need for in-person service determine which comparison is relevant. 2 5 10 14

This is general information, not personal financial, legal, tax, insurance or credit advice. It is not an offer, an application decision, or a recommendation to open, close or move an account. Deposit-account terms can change, and lending is separately subject to credit approval and underwriting.

Comparison universe and reproducible method

This is a four-institution comparison, not a ranking of all US credit unions. The universe is limited to the four institutions named in the existing URL: Navy Federal Credit Union, Alliant Credit Union, PenFed Credit Union and BECU. No other credit union was scored, sampled or excluded for performance reasons.

Aurex Intelligence Research Desk opened public official membership, account, rate, fee and/or disclosure pages for each institution, plus National Credit Union Administration (NCUA) insurance guidance, on 20 October 2026. We compared five reader-relevant dimensions: published membership routes; federal share-insurance context; a representative basic checking or membership-savings condition; a representative rate or qualification where an official page displayed a dated figure; and material access or fee conditions shown on the selected official pages. 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 10 11 12 13 14

The method deliberately assigns no composite score, rank, “winner,” stars, or best-overall label. That would require a stable, broad comparison universe, a published weighting policy and a fuller review of products, geography, consumer service, app accessibility, loan underwriting, complaints and account agreements. Those inputs were not assembled for this article. Results are reproducible: reopen the cited official pages, apply the five questions in the decision framework to your own facts, and record the displayed effective date and conditions. A changed official page is a reason to recheck, not evidence that an older conclusion remains valid.

What federal share insurance does—and does not—settle

All four institutions’ public materials state that they are federally insured by the NCUA. 2 5 10 14 The NCUA says the National Credit Union Share Insurance Fund provides at least $250,000 of total coverage for a member at a federally insured credit union, with separate treatment for categories such as joint accounts, certain retirement accounts and certain trust accounts. 1

That is a protection framework, not a reason to stop reading account terms. Coverage is determined by the credit union, account ownership and account category. The NCUA’s estimator is designed to evaluate share accounts at one credit union at a time and does not apply to stocks, bonds, mutual funds, annuities, cryptoassets or other non-share investments—even when offered through a credit union relationship. 15 A member with material balances, joint owners, beneficiaries, business accounts or trusts should use the NCUA tool and, where appropriate, obtain professional advice rather than rely on a one-line insurance rule.

The four institutions: published fit and boundaries

InstitutionMembership and geographic boundaryRepresentative account evidence, verified 20 October 2026Reader fit to investigate—not a recommendation
Navy FederalNavy Federal lists active-duty service members, veterans, immediate family members and Department of Defense civilians among its membership routes. It also says immediate family and household members, including roommates, of qualifying current or retired armed-forces, DoD personnel and current members may be eligible; a $5 Membership Savings balance is required to establish and maintain membership. 2Its Share Savings page lists a 0.25% APY with a $5 minimum deposit, rates as of 20 October 2026, and says offering rates may change. Its Free EveryDay Checking is described as a requirement-free, fee-free option with no minimum balance; the published fee schedule also lists a $3 quarterly inactive-member fee on a qualifying low-balance, inactive share-savings account. 3 4 12Investigate first if you have a genuine military, veteran, DoD, qualifying family or household connection. Do not infer eligibility from military interest, a location or a third party’s account alone.
AlliantAlliant says applicants may qualify through a partner employer, an immediate family member or domestic partner, an eligible community near its Chicago headquarters, or by selecting its foundation route in the application; it says it pays the one-time $5 foundation membership fee for applicants using that route. It also states that non-US residents with a Social Security number or valid ITIN can apply. 5Alliant’s High-Rate Savings page displayed 3.01% APY, accurate as of its 8 October 2026 dividend declaration, for an average daily balance of $100 or more; it says the rate may change. Its High-Rate Checking page displayed 0.25% APY, but only for eStatement users with a recurring monthly electronic deposit. The fee page, effective January 2026, lists no charge for ATM transactions and $10 dormant/inactivity savings fees where applicable. 6 7 8Investigate if digital service and national ATM access matter more than a branch relationship, and if you can meet the balance or activity condition attached to the account you want.
PenFedPenFed states that everyone is eligible to apply and that a person must become a PenFed member to receive an advertised product. Its Regular Savings page says a $5 savings deposit starts membership. Neither statement guarantees that an application or particular product will be approved. 9 10PenFed’s Free Checking page says there is no monthly service fee or monthly minimum-balance requirement and lists a $25 opening amount. Its service-fee page lists a free monthly service charge for Free Checking, but also lists other possible charges, including stop-payment, returned-item and certain retail-cash-deposit fees; it says third-party ATM surcharges may apply even when PenFed does not impose an out-of-network ATM fee. 11 12Investigate if you want a nationwide applicant route and a basic no-monthly-fee checking option, while checking the official fee schedule for the transactions you expect to make.
BECUBECU says anyone may apply but must be in its field of membership. Published routes include living, working, worshipping or attending school in Washington; specified Oregon and Idaho counties; specified employer and association ties; and a South Carolina route tied to an in-person location and a qualifying donation. The exact county and association list is on BECU’s eligibility page. 13BECU says its checking accounts have no monthly maintenance fee or minimum balance. Its Member Share Savings page displayed 0.20% APY and Member Advantage Savings 5.12% APY on the first $500, both effective 7 October 2026. Member Advantage requires a Member Advantage checking and savings account, eStatements and one monthly electronic-service transaction; it is limited to one such checking and savings account per person, and benefits may change. 14 16 17Investigate if you meet BECU’s field of membership and value its regional presence or a small-balance Member Advantage tier. Do not project the first-$500 rate onto a larger balance.

Navy Federal: access eligibility is the first screen

Navy Federal can be an important option for households with a qualifying military or DoD connection, but that is an eligibility screen, not a brand preference. Its public membership page lists active duty, veterans, immediate family and DoD civilians, while its FAQ adds eligible household members of current and retired qualifying people and current Navy Federal members. Documentation may be requested, including for a deceased qualifying family member. 2

For an eligible reader evaluating day-to-day banking, distinguish basic checking from higher-balance accounts. Navy Federal calls Free EveryDay Checking requirement-free and fee-free with no minimum balance, whereas Flagship Checking has a $10 monthly fee when the average daily balance is below $1,500. 12 The institution’s fees page also distinguishes no NSF returned-item fee from a $20 overdraft-protection charge when it pays an overdraft, subject to its published thresholds and discretion. 4 The practical lesson is to compare the specific checking account and your likely balance, rather than summarizing Navy Federal as simply “free.”

Alliant: digital membership route, but conditions still matter

Alliant presents a broad application path, including a foundation route, and says it is a digital credit union with no branches. 5 That makes it different from an institution chosen principally for local branch access. Its own site says it offers a network of more than 80,000 fee-free ATMs; ATM operators and availability of deposit-capable machines are separate practical questions, so check the locator for your routine locations. 5 7

Rate claims need their condition attached. Alliant’s High-Rate Savings displayed 3.01% APY as of 8 October 2026 but requires an average daily balance of at least $100 to earn interest; its FAQ says a $5 minimum balance keeps the savings account open. 6 Its checking rate is not a universal yield: the cited 0.25% APY requires eStatements and at least one monthly recurring electronic deposit, and the rate may change. 7 A reader who will not meet those conditions should compare the non-qualifying outcome rather than the advertised APY.

PenFed: distinguish “eligible to apply” from account approval

PenFed’s current public membership page says everyone is eligible to apply and that a person must become a member to obtain an advertised product. 9 Those statements support including PenFed in a national comparison, but they do not establish universal approval. Identity, membership and product processes still apply, and the product pages should be read at the time of application.

For a basic checking use case, PenFed’s Free Checking page says there is no monthly service fee or monthly minimum balance requirement; its fee schedule confirms a free monthly service charge. 11 12 That is not the same as saying all banking actions are free. The schedule lists example charges for returned ACH/check/preauthorized-debit items, stop payments and retail cash deposits after the first three in a month, while the ATM section makes clear that third-party operators may levy their own surcharge. 12 PenFed’s Regular Savings page confirms a $5 membership savings deposit but does not provide a usable displayed current numeric APY in the public page reviewed for this article, so no PenFed savings-rate comparison is made here. 10

BECU: specific field of membership, then tier discipline

BECU is not accurately described as nationwide on the basis of its public eligibility material. Its published field includes all Washington counties and a specified list of Oregon and Idaho counties, as well as association, employment and family routes; it also sets out a South Carolina route with additional location and donation conditions. 13 A move, work arrangement, school attendance, association status or family relationship can therefore be material to the analysis. Verify the full current eligibility page rather than relying on a county shorthand.

For eligible members, BECU’s standard checking and savings claims differ from its Member Advantage claims. The standard accounts are presented without monthly maintenance fees or minimum balances. 14 The enhanced current figures—3.04% APY in Member Advantage Checking and 5.12% APY in Member Advantage Savings—apply only to the first $500 and have stated effective dates of 1 and 7 October 2026, respectively. 16 Qualification requires opening both Member Advantage account types, receiving eStatements and completing one monthly electronic-service transaction; business and fiduciary accounts are not eligible. 17 That makes the feature potentially meaningful for a small operating balance or emergency reserve, but not evidence of a high yield across all savings.

How to compare fees and rates without being misled

A “no monthly fee” label is only one line in an account’s economics. Build a short personal fee test: out-of-network ATM use, cash deposits, outgoing wires, stop payments, returned payments, paper statements, inactivity and overdraft handling. Then use the issuer’s current schedule to price the actions you actually expect. For example, Alliant’s January 2026 schedule lists $25 domestic outgoing wires and $50 foreign outgoing wires; PenFed’s schedule lists $30 domestic and $35 international outgoing wires; Navy Federal lists $20 domestic and $25 international outgoing wires. 4 8 12 These are not universal costs for every reader; they illustrate why a headline checking fee alone is incomplete.

Apply the same discipline to APY. An APY is a standardized annualized yield, but what a person earns depends on the balance tier, whether conditions are met, days funds are on deposit, and the account’s stated compounding and crediting terms. Rates on variable accounts can change after opening. 3 6 Never compare a rate on the first $500 with a rate on an entire balance as if their annual dollar results were interchangeable. Keep a dated screenshot or downloaded disclosure from the day you decide, because a published page can change before funds arrive.

Evidence limitations, maintenance and corrections

This article reviewed public official pages only. Aurex did not open accounts, test mobile apps, use branches or ATMs, submit applications, assess service quality, investigate complaints, evaluate loan underwriting, or assess accessibility. Product availability, identity verification, geographic eligibility, documentation, account approval and lending decisions remain with each institution. We omitted a current numeric PenFed savings yield because the official pages opened did not present a complete, dated figure suitable for this comparison.
